The work
The damage moss does is indirect
Moss removal is scraping the moss and lichen off the tiles and clearing what comes off out of the gutters and valleys. The damage moss does is mostly indirect: it washes down into the drainage and sits there, so water backs up and either comes over the edge or runs under the tiles at the valley.
Water held against a concrete tile through a frost lifts the surface and shortens the life of the covering, so clearing the moss and keeping the drainage running protects the roof as well as tidying it. A treated roof stays clear for far longer than one that has only been scraped.
We scrape by hand at low pressure, clear the gutters, valleys and downpipes at the same time because that is where the material ends up, and put a biocide on afterwards to kill the spores left in the pores of the tile. The debris is bagged at ground level rather than left in your beds.
